DEBATE ON ABOLITION OF THE HOUSE OF LORDS
This week I participated in a debate on the abolition of the House of Lords.
I do not believe that an unelected, unaccountable chamber which influences legislation has any role in a modern democracy.
The House of Lords has become a haven for failed politicians and political cronies and does not command the legitimacy an elected chamber does.
The fact that Lords do not pay any income tax or national insurance contributions on their Allowances makes the lack of legitimacy all the more striking.
It is time this relic from the past was abolished in the name of democracy.
