WORK CAPABILITY ASSESSMENTS

Today I spoke in a debate about Work Capability Assessments the distress of which many of my constituents have been through.

These assessments are often carried out by people who are not medically qualified to do so, require “tick-box” or “yes” and “no” responses to complex medical conditions, which fail to appreciate the profound and complex impact of mental health challenges.

Those suffering with challenging health conditions often feel humiliated and extremely distressed by a process which results in 59% of decisions being overturned. This shows how flawed the process is and the unnecessary stress it causes to those seeking support as they live with often serious and debilitating illnesses.
