UK GOVERNMENT MUST "GET ITS ACT TOGETHER" ON EUROPEAN ARREST WARRANT
The Scottish National Party (SNP) has warned the Tory government to “get its act together” on European Arrest Warrant arrangements to prevent a gap in extradition procedures following Brexit.
The call from Joanna Cherry QC MP, follows a new report from the House of Lords EU Home Affairs Sub-Committee, which said the UK would... face an "unacceptable risk" if the UK Government did not have arrangements in place by the planned March 2019 EU withdrawal.
Commenting Joanna Cherry QC MP, SNP spokesperson on Justice and Home Affairs, said:
“The UK government must get its act together and ensure satisfactory European Arrest Warrant arrangements are in place by the time the UK leaves the EU.
“The clock is ticking, and there is a very real risk of an operational gap in extradition procedures if the Tory Government forces the UK out of the present warrant system, overseen by the European Court of Justice.
“This report highlights the utter chaos in the Tory government’s Brexit negotiating strategy and the incoherence of its plans.
"It is increasingly clear that the Tories simply cannot be trusted to protect Scotland's interests. It is essential that the devolved administrations are represented in the Brexit negotiations."
