LABOUR ABANDON SINGLE MARKET DESPITE HUGE DAMAGE TO UK ECONOMY

The SNP has said Jeremy Corbyn is failing the country by acting as a "cheerleader" for Theresa May's Tory Brexit, despite the damage it will do to the UK economy.

Speaking on Sunday morning's Andrew Marr show, the Labour leader abandoned his party's support for membership of the Single Market and incorrectly claimed that membership of it was dependent on membership of the EU. Mr Corbyn said:

“The Single Market is dependent on membership of the EU. What we have said all along is that we want a tariff free trade access to the European market and a partnership with Europe in the future.” He added that Labour had “yet to decide” whether it would keep the UK inside the European Customs Union.

Patricia Gibson responded:

"Labour is failing the entire UK by abandoning their support for our vital membership of the world's largest Single Market, despite the huge economic damage it will do.

"By acting as a cheerleader for Theresa May's Tory Brexit, Jeremy Corbyn will be just as culpable for the devastating impact it will have; destroying jobs, cutting family budgets, and squeezing living standards.

"There is now no difference in substance between the Tories and Labour on Brexit. Both are intent on driving the UK economy off a cliff edge, and neither is standing up for the interests of the millions of ordinary families who will be poorer and less secure as a result.

"Unlike Labour, the SNP will continue to take a common sense approach to the EU negotiations by standing up for Scotland's membership of the Single Market, protecting jobs and the economy, and putting the interests of the many over the narrow interests of Tory Brexiteers."

Chuka Umunna, the pro-EU Labour MP for Streatham, said:

“The overwhelming majority of Labour members think we should be fighting to stay in the Single Market - let's do it.”

Last month, Mr Umunna tabled a Westminster amendment calling for the Single Market to be kept “on the table” in Brexit negotiations. Labour MPs were not only whipped to vote with the Tories to oppose the amendment, three Shadow Cabinet members were sacked by Mr Corbyn for supporting it.
