"CLUELESS” MAY DODGES QUESTIONS ON “INDEFENSIBLE” POLICE SCOTLAND VAT STING
The SNP has said that Theresa May is “bang to rights” on her decision to charge Police Scotland VAT, after she was unable to offer any explanation for short changing Scotland's police force.
Police Scotland is the only police force in the UK to be charged VAT, and the SNP Government has repeatedly pressed the UK Government to lift the charge, which would free up millions of pounds to invest in frontline policing.
When asked about the issue in Edinburgh this afternoon, the Prime Minister was clearly unaware of the issue. She first laughed at the question, and then bizarrely suggested that people look at the SNP Government's record on VAT – even though the issue is wholly reserved.
Commenting, Patricia Gibson said: “Theresa May flew into Scotland to once again lecture people on the constitution but instead betrayed her staggering ignorance of the damage her government is doing to public services in Scotland.
“The Prime Minister was clearly unaware that, thanks to her government, Police Scotland is the only territorial force in the UK to be charged VAT. This was a shambolic performance from a clueless Prime Minister.
“The Tory position on VAT is an indefensible decision which has short-changed Police Scotland of tens of millions of pounds and Theresa May is bang to rights. “The Tory record of cutting police budgets and police numbers is rightly coming under more and more scrutiny and for her to try and laugh off such serious questions is contemptible. “It’s not just that Theresa May is ignorant about the damage her government is doing to public services in Scotland, she clearly doesn’t care.
“The surreal sight of The Prime Minister addressing activists in a removal warehouse served only to underline the opportunity that the people of Scotland have to remove her majority on Thursday.
“People in Scotland have the chance to deliver a verdict on the shameful record of Tory cuts in Thursday’s election. “Now more than ever, it is vital to elect strong SNP voices to stand up for Scotland against Tory cuts.”
