74th MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR TRAGIC LOSS OF HMS VANDAL

Once again this year I was delighted to attend the Memorial Service and lay a wreath at Lochranza on the Isle of Arran to commemorate the tragic loss of HM Submarine Vandal, with all hands lost.

The submarine, under the command of Lieutenant James S. Bridger, was lost whilst carrying out a three-day-long working up exercise following commissioning. The submarine was last seen leaving her anchorage on 24 February 1943 at Loch...ranza, in the North of the Isle of Arran before her rediscovery in December 1994.

The service, which took place in the sunshine, was short but sombre as we reflected on the loss of these young men and how they are still grieved by their families.
